The total value of retail trade sales in the United States amounted to $5.04 trillion  in 2017, a considerable rise from the four trillion figure a decade earlier. The drugs, health and personal care segment in the United States is not the largest on the retail market, being surpassed, among others, by the apparel and accessories and food and beverages industries. However, according to recent data, pharmacy and drug store sales amounted to about $276.92 billion in the United States in 2017.

Over the counter medication accounted for over $42 billion in sales during the same year. Approximately eight percent of the total retail sales value in the United States, some $260 million, is represented by e-commerce sales, which are on the rise worldwide, as a result of the ubiquity of desktop and mobile computers and devices.
